AI website builder or custom website: which fits the job?

Compare an AI website builder, custom work and a hybrid approach by content, editing, testing, ownership and the work your business needs to do.

Two fictional website concepts illustrating different approaches to the same customer journey
Illustration: compare the same business and customer journey in two visual directions. Both concepts are fictional; appearance alone does not establish usability, accessibility or business results.

Start with the work the website must do

An AI website builder can help turn a short brief into a first draft of a layout and copy. A custom project can put more attention into the service story, visual direction and connected customer journey. Either can be a reasonable starting point. Neither removes the need to check the facts, test the form and decide who maintains the result.

“AI” describes a tool or method; “custom” describes how closely the work is shaped around your requirements. They can overlap. A designer may use AI during a custom project, and an owner may refine a builder draft with expert help. Compare the finished responsibilities and handoff.

Compare the same brief in each approach

Questions for an AI builder and a custom project
DecisionBuilder-led approachCustom project
ContentWho corrects generated service claims, prices and location details?Who interviews the owner, drafts the pages and obtains factual approval?
DesignCan the editor support the layout and brand changes you need?Which original design decisions are included, and how many review rounds?
FunctionsDoes the selected plan support the real form, booking or store task?Which connections are configured and tested within the signed scope?
EditingCan the owner make a routine change without breaking the layout? Is editing through a CMS, technical source or a maintenance service?
OwnershipWhat can be exported, and what requires the platform to keep running?Which paid source and assets are handed over, and which licenses remain?
CostWhat are the subscription, renewal, add-on and usage costs? What are the build fee, provider bills and optional ongoing work?

A subscription comparison is not a total project comparison. Include the owner’s time for writing, media selection, checking and ongoing edits. Use the website cost guide to put both options on the same basis.

Run a small trial before choosing

Give each approach the same approved service paragraph, real coverage area, licensed image and desired inquiry fields. Build one service-to-contact journey. Then ask someone unfamiliar with the business to find the service, identify whether it fits their need and make a test inquiry.

  • Change one service detail and one image. Note how long the edit takes and whether help is needed.
  • Try the journey on a phone and with the keyboard. Record the actual obstruction rather than judging only the screenshot.
  • Confirm where the inquiry goes and whether the owner can respond.
  • Ask for an export or recovery demonstration before assuming the site can move to another host.

Download the website approach comparison. Add your owner, result and evidence to each row. The sheet includes its source and review date.

Use the result to choose. A clear builder site you can maintain may serve you better than a custom site without a usable handoff. Custom work may earn its cost when the content, identity or workflow needs more deliberate design.

Review generated copy like any other draft

Check every service claim against the business’s actual work. Look for invented years of experience, credentials, client names, project results and locations. Replace vague claims with specific approved facts: what you do, what you need from a customer and what happens after an inquiry.

Google’s guidance on generative AI content allows room for AI as a research and structuring aid, while emphasizing accurate, relevant content and warning against producing many pages without value for users. Publishing the same generic page under many town names does not answer a new customer question.

Keep a named human approver for business claims. A generated project image should not be presented as a photograph of completed customer work. Review licenses and the tool’s actual terms for the assets you intend to publish.

When a studio project is worth discussing

Wonder and Method’s Launch package is $1,400 for up to 3 marketing pages; Focused is $2,350 for up to 7; Signature is $3,700 for up to 12. Page counts are scope limits. Editing, connected tools and creative needs should drive the choice. Read the complete package inclusions before comparing a quote.
